Are you required to file a tax return to Norway?

All individuals how have executed work in Norway are required to file a Norwegian tax return. The process can be complex, here are some common questions and answers.

Who must submit a tax return in Norway? Foreign residents in Norway, individuals working in multiple countries including Norway, and those with unconventional work arrangements within Norway are required to submit their tax return. Non-residents with Norwegian-source income (e.g. salary earned in Norway or Norwegian property income) may also have reporting obligations.
When is the deadline for filing? The deadline for individuals are the 30th of April each year.
Do I need to file if the tax return is pre-filled? Yes. Even though the Norwegian tax return is pre-completed, you are responsible for reviewing and correcting all information before deadline and submission. 
What income must be reported in the tax return? All income, regardless of origin, must be reported if you are a tax resident in Norway. This includes salary, business income, rental income, dividends, interests, commuter expenses, and foreign income.
What deductions can I claim in my tax return? Common deductions are interests, travel expenses to and from work, parental deductions, and certain costs related to temporary work stays—depending on individual circumstances.
What happens if I submit incorrect information or miss the deadline? Errors or late filing may result in additional tax, penalties, or interests. The Norwegian Tax Administration may also conduct audits. 
What is tax residency in Norway? You generally become a tax resident if you stay in Norway for more than 183 days in a 12-month period or 270 days in a 36-month period. 
Can I opt out of the PAYE scheme?

Yes. You may opt out and be taxed under the ordinary tax rules if this is more beneficial. 

Is PAYE always the best solution? No. If you have significant deductions or lower income, ordinary taxation may result in lower overall tax.

Norwegian tax return

The Norwegian tax return year runs from January 1st until December 31st. The tax return must be completed by April 30th of the following year. 

The tax return summarizes your income, deductions, wealth, and debts. 

Our deadline for submitting your personal income tax return is April 30th every year. 

Please place your order as soon as possible. Orders received after April 20th may not be processed before May 31st of the same year. Also, after the deadline, we can not guarantee a submission date. However, we will endeavor to process your order as promptly as possible.
